Rules of Engagement

What We Encourage

Honesty

We value stories and opinions that are honest. We provide people with the opportunity to show their true colors under the veil of anonymity. When on The Doe, it’s best to be mindful of one’s own biases: express yourself genuinely and tell your story as truthfully as possible.

“If you do not tell the truth about yourself, you cannot tell it about other people.”
- Virgina Woolf
“We rise by lifting others.”
- Robert G. Ingersoll

Civility

We cherish people that are respectful to others and are diplomatic. When writing for The Doe, we encourage you to be humble: Even if you disagree with someone’s opinion, be kind towards them.

Curiosity

We value the exploration of new ideas through challenging one’s own beliefs. We value keeping an open mind, as we believe it makes one able to be clearer in one’s own vision of the world.

“The public have an insatiable curiosity to know everything, except what is worth knowing.”
- Oscar Wilde
“Without debate, without criticism, no administration and no country can succeed and no republic can survive.”
- John F. Kennedy

Debate

We promote a productive, non-partisan discourse. We value the understanding that one’s own truth might be subjective, and facts might be diluted. We believe that productive and positive debate is necessary for society to be able to move forward in the right direction.

What We Discourage

Hateful content

We highly discourage content or expression that is aimed or targeted at a certain person or groups of people—based on your own preconceived notions about a particular group. We are against content that dishonors someone based on factors which he or she can’t control.

“As long as you hate, there will be people to hate.”
- George Harrison
“If you can, help others; if you cannot do that, at least do not harm them.”
- The 14th Dalai Lama

Harmful or dangerous content

We disavow content that is designed to create a disturbance in the social fabric, with the specific purpose of harming or promoting dangerous activities.

Harassment or bullying

We believe that you don’t need to put others down to feel good about yourself. We discourage content aimed at devaluing one’s opinion, confidence or persona. This would include targeted hateful statements, threats and continuous negative engagement with a specific person or a group of people.

“Knowing what’s right doesn’t mean much unless you do what’s right.”
- Theodore Roosevelt

What We Ban

Outing

We are heavily against exposing personal information or details that would threaten or otherwise pose a risk to someone else’s safety. This would include addresses, work positions, full names and other personal details.

Graphic content

We will ban pornographic, violent, shocking or otherwise graphic content when it’s used or implemented solely for the purpose of shock factor.

Violence

We are heavily against and will ban content which incites violence, regardless of the target of said violence. We will ban content pertaining to the promotion of violence in any form. We will ban content that implies taking violent actions or otherwise directly threatens the safety of a particular person or a group.
